Currently I teach on three programmes – Drama and Performance undergraduate, Film and Media undergraduate and the MA Culture and Creative Enterprise. (Prior to my current position I worked as a visiting lecturer at ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙÍø since 1996 and participated in a wide variety of modules and programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level).
I have a background in entrepreneurship. Over many years I have set up a range of businesses, including – a data management company, an eCard design and marketing website, a proofreading and editing business, a website providing information on discounts and concessions for senior citizens and two family run retail establishments. The data management company – DCA Scotland – ran for 15 years and successfully ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙÍøed a range of learning information software and databases. During this time I employed over ten ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙÍø graduates in various jobs within the company.
I also have a background in careers guidance having worked as a careers adviser for Lothian Regional Council providing careers help and advice to a wide range of clients – including school pupils, college students, children with special needs, adults and employers.
I am a member of ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙ꿉۪s Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Advisory Group. As part of this I have been involved in ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙÍøing the on-campus ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙÍø Startup Studio and I am actively involved in helping a range of creative industry students set up new businesses which will be located in the Startup area. As a member of the group I will also be involved in the implementation of ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙ꿉۪s Entrepreneurship Action Plan and associated knowledge exchange activities.
Looking to ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙÍø research into entrepreneurship within the creative sector and the use of social media by micro businesses.
My primary teaching and learning areas include the following topics:- entrepreneurship, employability, client working, project management, experiential and reflective learning, group working, personal ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙÍøment planning – all of this focused on the creative industry sector. I have a particular interest in the role of entrepreneurship within the creative sector and seek to encourage students to consider this as an option for themselves post-graduation. Client working is another main focus - helping students understand the issues and opportunities involved in this aspect of their studies. I also look to ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁϱ¬ÁϹÙÍø their understanding of the theory and practice of reflective learning.
